Mumbai: Whoever said that celebrities don't care about what's going on in the real world, Salman Khan will make them rethink that. He has promised to donate 2,500 water tanks to drought-hit districts in Maharashtra, which is facing its worst drought in 40 years.
Across Maharashtra, it has been a devastatingly dry summer as more than 11,000 villages grapple with the worst drought in four decades. But there might be some respite soon as Salman Khan has provided some relief to parts of Vidharbha and Marathwada.
"I don't want be remembered as an actor, I just want to be known by 'Being Human'. This Salman Khan name should just vanish now, it should go," Salman said.
The actor, through his charity, Being Human, has promised to distribute 2,500 water tanks in the region. And 400 of these tanks have already been sent to Osmanabad, Beed, Jalna, Aurangabad and Nanded, some of the areas hit worst by the drought.
Salman Khan is not alone. Taking a cue from the 'Dabangg' star, veteran singer Asha Bhosle has pledged Rs 5 lakh to the Chief Minister's Relief fund. Nana Patekar, too, has donated his cash prize of Rs 10 lakh from the Raj Kapoor Memorial award for drought relief. Earlier this year, some eco-conscious Bollywood stars had even propagated water-free Holi celebrations, keeping in mind the acute water shortage in Maharashtra.
Till the time the rain gods smile on the country, one hopes that more stars do their bit to end the dry spell.
